General Election 2008:

Pakistan Peoples Party (Sherpao)

The Pakistan Peoples Party (Sherpao) or Pakistan Peoples Party (S) is a political party in Pakistan, that split away from the Pakistan Peoples Party. The party is named after its leader Aftab Sherpao. At the last legislative elections, 20 October 2002, the party won 0.3% of the popular vote and 2 out of 272 elected members.

Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP)

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is a mainstream political party in Pakistan. The Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) is a party formed in 2002 by the PPP for the purpose of complying with electoral rules governing Pakistani parties. The PPP was originally established in 1967 by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in support of Islamic socialism, democracy and non-alignment in international affairs. In 1977, General Zia ul-Haq ousted the PPP government and in 1979, Bhutto was executed. His widow, Begum Nasrat, and daughter, Benazir, subsequently became the leaders of the party. With the recent assassination of party leader Benazir Bhutto, her son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will assume the leadership position of the PPP when he finishes his studies at Oxford University. In the meantime, his father, Asif Ali ZARDARI will serve as the co-chairman of the PPP.

Pakistan's Muslim League / (PML/Q)

The Pakistan Muslim League (Q) or officially Pakistan Muslim League is a centrist, conservative political party in Pakistan. The present form of PML-Q was formed in 2001. The Pakistan Muslim League is derived from the original Pakistan Muslim League which had laid foundation of the state of Pakistan. PML-Q was formed in 2001, when the Pakistan Muslim League fractured into several parties, of which the PML-Q was the smallest in terms of public support. The party strongly supports President Pervez Musharraf. Most members of the original PML now are part of the PML-Q.

Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz Sharif faction (PML/N)

The Pakistan Muslim League (N) was established in 1993 and it’s currently headed by former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif. The Pakistan Muslim League was founded in 1962, as a successor to the previously disbanded Muslim League, and gained the (Nawaz) or (N) in 1993 for its leader, Nawaz Sharif. Factions of the PML-N broke away in 2001 forming Pakistan Muslim League (Q). Only PML-F is the other known political party besides these two with the PML name. Although some party leaders were sent to exile and others to jail, in the 2002 Pakistani general election, the party won 9.4% of the popular vote and 14 out of 272 elected members.

Pakistan Muslim League, Functional Group (PML/F)

The Pakistan Muslim League (F) is one of the factions of the original Pakistan Muslim League. The letter 'F' in its name stands for «functional». In the 2002 Pakistani general election, the party won 1.1 % of the popular vote and 4 out of 272 elected members.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI)

The PTI was formed in 1996. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) advocates economic growth and a welfare state and has a major influence in Pakistan's middle class. At the last legislative elections, 20 October 2002, the party won 0.8% of the popular vote and 1 out of 272 elected members. "Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem" is the slogan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT)

The Pakistan Awami Tehrik (Pakistan People's Movement) was established in 1989 in Lahore as a political party based purely on Islamic social & democratic principles. At the last legislative elections, 20 October 2002, the party won 0.7% of the popular vote and 1 out of 272 elected members. The founder and chairman of the party is Tahir-ul-Qadri.

Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA)

United Council for Action or Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) is an Islamic alliance between religious-political parties in Pakistan. Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) was established in 2001 by the Assembly of Islamic Clergy (Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Islam, JUI), the Assembly of Pakistani Clergy (Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Pakistan, JUP), the Islami Tehrik-i-Pakistan (TiP), the Pakistan Islamic Assembly (Jamaat-e-Islami-e-Pakistan, JIP), the Jammu and Kashmir Jamiat-e-Islami and the Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith (JAH). In the Pakistani parliament, the MMA is a coalition opposition, formed after Pakistan became a part of the "Global War on Terror". The coalition is united against the current government of President Pervez Musharraf because of his support for the United States' fight against what they consider to be global terrorism and allegedly putting the demands of the United States above the demands of his own people. The MMA advocates a return to the constitution, the creation of an Islamic state and a negotiated settlement of the Kashmir problem. Qazi Hussain Ahmad is the leader of the MMA.

Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM)

Muttahida Quami Movement, generally known as MQM or as Mohajir Quami Movement, is a political party, founded and currently led by Altaf Hussain. It originated as an ethnic student organization in 1978 from University of Karachi. The students movement later turned into an influential political party of Sindh. Later on July 26, 1997, MQM officially changed its name from Mohajir Quami Movement to Muttahida Quami Movement. MQM is infamous for its frequent involvement in terrorist activities although its leaders routinely deny such accusations. MQM supports the interests of the Mohajirs, Urdu-speaking migrants from India.
